PAAC Alberta Chapter: The Political Economy of Plastics – In Conversation with Industry and Public Policy Experts

Canadians across the country have grown accustomed to the practicality of single-use plastic items. In October 2020, Federal Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson unveiled a list of plastics including grocery bags, straws, stir sticks, six-pack rings, and cutlery that the government has committed to banning in 2021.

Have you wondered about the policy behind the ban and the latest federal announcement? Will this lead to more constitutional challenges from provinces? How do Canadians in various jurisdictions view the ban differently? How will our lives change without these items? The Political Economy of Plastics session will try to answer these pressing questions and more by examining the details of public policy directions, the benefits of the ban, the unintended consequences on businesses and Canadians daily lives, and how politics play into the world of plastics.
